Course Description

This course is offered twice a year.  It is offered for Winter and Summer semesters.
 
 
The purpose of the Additional Qualification course: Visual Arts, Specialist is to extend the skills and knowledge of teachers in the teaching and assessment of visual arts education. Critical to the delivery of Visual Arts, Specialist is the ability of teachers to ensure positive learning experiences for all students.
 

Course Outline

 Topics include:
  • evaluating the role art can play in cross-curricular studies
  • promoting multicultural art in the classroom
  • designing as well as evaluating innovative practices in visual arts education
  • strengthening personal artistic competencies related to classroom instruction
  • understanding rights and responsibilities in dealing with censorship on controversial art issues in the classroom and museum
  • understanding the roles and responsibilities of the art critic, art historian, art advocate, department head, museum art educator, art mentor, and art specialist
  • facilitating mentorship and coaching networks
  • facilitating opportunities for ongoing professional learning opportunities for teachers in visual arts education
  • modeling collaborative approaches to educational planning in visual arts education across the curriculum
  • comparing art from diverse cultures (native, multicultural, Canadian)
  • having an awareness of innovative art trends

OSAP Funding for AQ Courses

This AQ course is on the list of eligible courses for OSAP funding.   Students must enroll in courses prior to the semester deadline date.  If you are eligible, OSAP will reimburse funds after the semester drop date and will do so directly to you.

Prerequisites

  • OCT Certificate of Qualification must be in good standing.
  • Successful completion of AQ Visual Arts, Part 2.
  • "Confirmation of Teaching Experience form, signed by a supervisory officer*, confirming two years of teaching experience completed after teacher’s certification. The Superintendent must also recognize on this Confirmation of Teaching Experience form that in one of these years, the candidate has demonstrated that significant program and instruction in Visual Arts were explicitly planned, implemented and reviewed in the teacher’s class.  The form must be submitted prior to the course start date and for course approval.

*The Ontario College of Teachers defines “supervisory official” as the Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent of the school board for a teacher employed by a Board of Education. (A principal or headmaster is not recognized in this capacity).
