Course Description

This Nursing Specialty Option provides the learner an opportunity for in-depth study of a topic of interest. Topics are relevant to learners preparing for a career in nursing or other health professions and will vary from term to term. This course will be open to non-nursing students. (3 lecture hours a week, with possible lab or experiential component depending on the topic).  

 

The Wound Management Course encourages learners to use an evidence-informed approach to assessing and managing wounds. Learners will apply evidenced-based knowledge regarding factors that impact wound management and the indication for advanced products and modalities. An interdisciplinary approach will focus on patient and family teaching and education strategies to promote patient-centered care and positive outcomes.

Learning Outcomes 

  1. Apply knowledge of skin anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, healing, risk factors, comorbidities, and factors that impact healing to assess persons with various wound types.   
  2. Integrate evidence-based knowledge (e.g., cleansing, dressings, interventions, devices) to manage persons with various wound types.   
  3. Apply critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and clinical judgement to plan, prioritize and evaluate care for persons with various wound types (e.g., acute, chronic, infected). 
  4. Describe the various interdisciplinary and transitional care needs to promote patient and family-centered care for persons with various wound types. 
  5. Differentiate between the various interdisciplinary and transitional care needs to promote patient and family-centred care for persons with various wound types. 
  6. Integrate complementary and alternative treatments/modalities into a care plan for persons with wounds.  
  7. Analyze patient and societal factors (e.g., social determinants of health, culture, spirituality) and their influence on caring for persons with wounds. 
  8. Apply principles of health promotion, teaching/learning and evidenced-informed decision-making to facilitate positive outcomes for persons with wounds. 

 

Notes

Learners must activate their UWinID before classes begin. To avoid being dropped from the program, learners must begin the program during week 1 and continue to stay active in the program.
