Course Description

This course offers registered nurses and prospective nurse practitioner students a structured opportunity to review, practise, and refine comprehensive head-to-toe physical assessment skills in preparation for advanced clinical practice.

The course is open to two groups of learners: registered nurses seeking to enhance their physical assessment competencies, and students enrolled in the ONPEC Nurse Practitioner Program who will be entering the Advanced Health Assessment and Diagnosis (AHAD) course in Fall 2026. For prospective AHAD students, this course provides targeted preparation for the Comprehensive Physical Examination (Adult) Demonstration, which is an entry requirement of the AHAD course, and supports readiness for the rigorous clinical placement expectations of the NP program.

Health Assessment Refresher Course is delivered in a blended format, combining self-paced online modules with a 1-day in-person lab. Learners are encouraged to complete registration by July 29, 2026.

Self-Paced Modules:

  • Participants must complete all self-paced modules, including the quiz prior to in-person on August 29th
  • Each module will require approximately 10 hours to complete.

Weekly virtual Q&A sessions:

  • Sessions are optional, they will be recorded and posted

In-Person Lab:

  • The final in-person session will provide learners with the opportunity to practise and peer-evaluate assessment skills in small groups under faculty guidance.
  • Date and Time: August 29, 2026 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
  • A 30-minute lunch break will be provided, please bring your lunch
  • Dress comfortably

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Conduct a complete, systematic, and independent head-to-toe physical assessment
  • Identify areas of focused development to support success in comprehensive physical examination testing
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the hands-on components of physical examination across body systems

Participants who successfully complete all course requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion.

Please note: This course is designed to complement and prepare learners for the AHAD entry requirement but does not substitute for the in-person Comprehensive Physical Examination (Adult) Demonstration, nor does it contribute to the AHAD course grade.
