Course Description

This course reflects on the teaching practice in Ontario. It also explores policy and legislation relevant to teaching including the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO), the role of the Ontario College of Teachers and the strategies related to differentiated instruction, diversity, special education, and student assessment.

Course Outline

Topics include:
·       understanding Ontario curriculum policies and initiatives
·       reflecting on teaching practice and engaging in professional dialogue on the relationship of theory and practice in teaching in Ontario
·       having awareness of policy and/or legislation relevant to teaching in Ontario
·       exploring the diversity of Ontario’s rich cultural and language landscape in relation to teaching and learning
·       having an awareness and understanding of the significance of the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO)
·       Ontario classrooms
·       understanding the role and responsibilities of the Ontario College of Teachers as the self-regulatory body for the teaching profession
·       building knowledge of effective practices and instructional strategies used in Ontario classrooms
·       increasing awareness of different learning styles and how they affect classroom instruction
·       employing a variety of instructional strategies and tools to support differentiated teaching and student learning in Ontario 
·       using a range of assessment, evaluation and reporting strategies that support the dignity, emotional wellness and cognitive development of all students

·       exploring past, present and evolving practices in Orientation to Teaching in Ontario  


  • Hold a “Certificate of Qualification” showing basic qualifications in two divisions, i.e. Primary, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior. Candidates who hold an Interim COQ may have different/additional criteria for registration as required by the Ontario College of Teachers, and as specified on their Interim COQ. 
  • "Certificate of Qualification" must be in good standing.


NOTE:  If you have qualifications in Technological Education subjects, your certificate of qualification and registration enables you to complete a number of AQs, including any in Schedule C.
