Course Description

Take this offering to understand how businesses manage the process of clearing borders and how border agencies enforce customs and immigration laws and protect public safety at ports of entry. This online, asynchronous module will include the following topics on Border Management:

  1. Agencies, policies and functions, operational security, immigration, duty collection and emerging technologies
  2. Traders, compliance management, foreign trade zones, intermediaries (customs brokers, trade law)

This module applies towards the following certificates:

Certificate in Trade Logistics and Border Management

Certificate in Advanced International Trade and Border Management

Course Outline

Successful completion of this module will require active participation in online discussions, review of module materials, assignments/lab sessions and short quizzes.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:

  • explain the roles, responsibilities and day to day operations of border agencies at ports of entry, how they have been successful in executing on their mandates and where global pressures (financial, movement of people) have constrained their ability to carry out their work
  • understand the role of a liaison among internal businesses groups such as IT, legal, sales, logistics, asset management, operations and others to ensure proper adherence to laws and regulations that impact cross-border business
  • know and understand methods for managing and mitigating risk related to cross-border transactions involving movement of people, services, goods and funds
  • know keys to liaising with Customs and Immigration Agencies and other applicable government agencies relative to conducting cross-border business
  • develop and implement policy statements to ensure compliance in the movement of people into Canada and the U.S.
  • evaluate and compare current National and International global mobility programs, practices and policies
  • identify the most appropriate, compliant immigration options to meet the needs of international company in transferring and assigning employees across borders
  • monitor legislative and policy changes affecting global mobility

This is an online offering that will be offered through the Blackboard Learning Management System. It is expected that you will have the appropriate browser and computer access. You will be asked to regularly log into the module from your computer or other appropriate electronic device with online access through Blackboard. Please review the Blackboard preferred system requirements.

There is a “Navigating Your Online Course” module and technical tutorials that can you can review for a brief orientation to Blackboard. After registration, you will be sent additional details, including login information.

Prerequisites

In order to ensure you are academically prepared, it is expected that you have:

  1. Successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalency
  2. Successfully completed one grade 12 math or equivalency (recommended)
  3. English Language Proficiency
  4. Postsecondary education and relevant work experience would be an asset

Proof of completion may be requested for any of the above.

About OSAP 2021-22 Micro-credentials Application

  • This program is eligible for the OSAP 2021-22 Micro-credential application (OSAPMC).
  • Participants must be registered into the program prior to applying for OSAPMC.
  • You now have the option to place a deposit during registration to secure your spot, which will provide documentation for you to submit an OSAPMC application.
    • Please note: Full payment must be made 1 week prior to the course start date regardless of OSAPMC approval.
  • In the event that OSAPMC is not approved, please email us at continue@uwindsor.ca at least one 1 week prior to the course start date to request a refund.
  • Register for this program accordingly to allow ample time for your application to be processed. It takes approximately 10-15 business days for the OSAPMC application to be processed.
