Course Description

The Additional Qualification course Honour Specialist, Technological Education focuses on curriculum leadership. The course addresses contexts and theories underpinning the study of Technological Education. Pedagogy, curriculum, assessment and evaluation, technology, child and adolescent development related to program planning and implementation are also addressed.
 

Course Outline

Topics included in this course:
  • analyzing the Ministry of Education elementary and secondary curriculum policies and identifying implications for program planning and implementation
  • exploring teaching and learning strategies related to the learning styles of assisting colleagues to modify learning expectations and teaching practices and to make accommodations for the learner based on developmental and/or special needs
  • exploring opportunities for cross-curricular literacy and interdisciplinary studies in Technological Education
  • examining the use of appropriate technology to implement the Technological Education curriculum and facilitate student learning
  • promoting the safe, ethical and legal use of technology and other resources in Technological Education programs
  • modelling the development and use of an array of assessment and evaluation strategies suitable for teaching Technological Education
  • promoting the benefits of participating in local, provincial, national and international organizations related to the teaching of Technological Education
  • assisting others to access organizational, print and electronic resources which support the curriculum, professional growth and leadership
  • promoting the use of information and communication technologies as teaching and learning tools where appropriate
  • modelling team-building and decision-making skills necessary as a curriculum leader in Technological Education
  • encouraging and supporting colleagues’ interests in professional growth opportunities related to the teaching of Technological Education
  • demonstrating skills and strategies that facilitate the establishment of networks with school and board personnel, subject associations, parents/guardians and the community to support Technological Education
  • demonstrating knowledge and skills required to manage an area of responsibility including staffing, budgets and the selection of texts, software, and media.

Minimum Pre-requisites:

  • Certificate of Qualification and Registration
  • two school years of successful teaching, including at least one school year of experience teaching a technological education subject from Schedule B
  • a secondary school graduation diploma or successful completion of the equivalent of one year of full-time study in a program that requires a Secondary School Graduation Diploma or its equivalent for admission.

Prerequisites

  • a Certificate of Qualification and Registration
  • two school years of successful classroom teaching experience, including at least one in a technological education subject listed in Schedule B
  • a secondary school graduation diploma or the equivalent of one year’s full-time study in a relevant program
  • one of the following:
    • one qualification in grades 9 and 10 in a technological education subject listed in Schedule B, and one qualification in grades 11 and 12 in the same subject, and two other qualifications, each of which is in a different technological education subject, in grades 9 and 10 or grades 11 and 12, or a combination of the two
    • or two qualifications in grades 9 and 10 in technological education subjects listed in Schedule B, and qualifications in grades 11 and 12 in the same two subjects
    • or four qualifications in grades 9 and 10 in technological education subjects listed in Schedule B and a specialist qualification.

Note: any of the following AQs are equivalent to one qualification in grades 9 and 10 in a technological education subject in Schedule B:
