Course Description

Succession planning is a critical component of organizational sustainability and growth. This course will help learners become clear on what needs to happen to ensure business continuity in times of transition and change.  This module is designed to equip leaders with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex landscape of identifying, developing, and retaining top talent within their organizations. Participants will delve into the strategic aspects of leadership, understanding the importance of foresight, adaptability, and talent development for long-term success. Through a combination of theoretical frameworks, case studies, and practical exercises, this course will guide participants in crafting effective succession plans that align with organizational goals and foster a culture of continuous improvement.

  • Succession Planning Essentials: Gain insights into the importance of succession planning and its impact on organizational resilience. Learn how to assess current talent pools, identify critical roles, and develop strategies for seamless transitions.
  • Considering Organizational Strategic Goals: Review organizational strategic goals (growth phase, downsizing, projects, etc.). Consider future staffing needs to be met in accordance with strategic goals
  • Identifying At Risk Positions: Identify positions that, if vacated, would stop critical tasks from being performed. Identify positions currently filled with workers that are likely to retire in the next few years. Job forecast of positions to be phased out or created according to strategic goals
  • Defining Competencies for At Risk Positions: Education, experience, technical skills, soft skills, behaviours and values.
  • Creating Program Documents: Policies, procedures, forms and communication material
  • Communicating the Program: Exploring methods to engage employees and encourage participation in the program
  • Determining Individual Development Plans: Exploring development options such as formal training, knowledge sharing, experiential learning, coaching, mentoring, etc.
